In this photograph “Stob Dubh” by Fay Godwin it shows a
group of small trees in the foreground with a mountain top and sky in the
background. We can see the mountain clearly yet the numerous trees give a sense
of mystery and wonder, as to where it leads to/what’s inside them and why they
may be significant to the image. The lighting is shown at the very top of the
mountain with the bright sky, showing a contrast when compared to the darker
‘lower’ area of the image. The photograph has low contrast and is quite smooth,
as opposed to sharp and edged with may be seen on more contrasted images. The
black and white colouring of the image creates a calm yet unstable mood with
the group of trees which aren’t clear as to what they have inside or where they
might lead to. The relationship with the foreground and background is a dual
contrast two almost opposite moods and appearances.
